Annual Volunteer Update
This year was a banner year for Mental Health America volunteers. Our volunteers provided over 4,342 hours of service!
In April of 2007 Mental Health America created a special award. This annual award is named after an extraordinary volunteer, Bill Haase. Bill has given of himself for over 23 years! “He has been there to copy, print, proof-read, and mail bulk items. His impeccable proofreading has been very helpful to our staff.” says Beth Summers, Manager of Volunteer Services.
Bill was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and in 1985, he joined his two brothers and their wives here in Arizona. A friend of his living in the same complex was a volunteer at MHAAZ. She was called upon to pick-up chicken for a program MHAAZ used to have called the O.K. Socialites. When they arrived with the chicken they quietly involved him making name tags to hand out to the attendees. He was hooked and been a faithful volunteer ever since, most of the time putting in forty hours of work a week.
With computers and faster copying machines Bill does not have to come in as much lately. But he is not staying home. He drives his Mustang convertible to the jazz concerts and symphonies. Bill still volunteers when there is a special project. He enjoys spending time with his brother and sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews and their children.
We are very honored to have Bill Haase spend his years giving so much of himself to Mental Health America.
This year’s Bill Haase Volunteer award went to Tamara Milke, a volunteer who’s success story is an inspiration to all persons living with mental illness. Upon receiving the award she said, “In seven months volunteering with Mental Health America, I have gone from hiding under my bed...terrified to come out and afraid of everyone – to working full time and feeling good about myself, and what my abilities are... and not giving upon myself..” We are happy for Tamara, who now has a full time paid position with a local business.
The supportive environment found at MHAAZ makes our agency a safe place to volunteer. MHAAZ helps people get back on their feet and start living again and provides a place for people to give back to their community.
